I’m sorry but I don’t have the same handwriting in any two classes, do you expect Snape as a student and Snape as a teacher have the same exact handwriting, especially given the different contexts of writing (in the margins of a book and on a board)? And is handwriting really that strong of an indicator that Harry would instantly know it was Snape? Maybe Harry just isn’t good at recognizing handwriting.

Then you probably wouldn’t know. Conservation of detail says that anything that isn’t important to the character’s personality, the plot of the day, or a joke won’t be touched on, so unless it’s a relationship episode or a joke about an ex or the character is the type of person who goes through significant others faster than tissues so you regularly see their dates it won’t be brought up.

Think about the shows you watch where you never see people with significant others or speaking about romance at all. For all you know, one of the characters IS gay and you just don’t know it because it doesn’t matter.

This is for you, crazy Athens kids.

7th place… not too shabby.

Sure, Athens hadn’t placed in that many events, and she wouldn’t be going to nationals, but 7th place is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, she had gotten medals in 4 events. And broken up the eight schools from the southeast region - who would have swept the top eight spots in the competition otherwise.

No, 7th place wasn’t bad, not at all. Athens smiled, holding her medals close as she walked towards her bus.

“Hey, Athens! Wait up!” She stopped suddenly and turned around, to see North Pocono walking briskly after her. She couldn’t help but smile at how casual he tried to look while at the same time trying to walk fast enough to not make her wait. “Hey, good job today,” he said. glancing down at her medals. “You hear what place you got overall, yet?”

“Yeah, I did,” she nodded. “7th place.” North Pocono smiled, but Athens could tell there was a bit of jealousy there.

“Oh, that’s not too shabby!”

“My thoughts exactly!” There was a brief moment of silence while Athens wondered whether she’d have to ask the question that was hanging in the air. “So… how did you do?” North flashed a wide grin, gripping his own medals tight.

“Well, it’s definitely not 7th, but I got 11th! Still not too shabby, though a bit shabbier than you did,” he said, laughing slightly.

“Definitely not!” It was especially impressive considering North Pocono’s past. Athens had been coming to the competition for years, and had had plenty of experience. North Pocono… didn’t. They showed up at States last year out of nowhere and surprised everybody by taking 19th. Not that great of a place, until you considered that it was their first year. “You’ve gotten a lot better since last year, if you don’t mind my saying so.”

“I definitely don’t, I’ve been working hard to be the best Science Olympiad I can be!” He shook his medals triumphantly, holding them high in the air for everybody to see, completely unphased by the fact that two of the three were from trial events that didn’t even count. Quite suddenly, though, he dropped the medals and took a deep breath.

“That’s actually kind of why I came over to talk to you, though,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. His voice was a lot softer than Athens was used to hearing it, lacking the bravado he usually carried himself with. “I wanted to thank you for your help these last two years… you’ve given me a lot of advice, you know? Plus, that invitational you held gave me plenty of experience, gave me a great idea of what I’d need to do. I don’t think I could have done it without you.”

Athens winced. She remembered last year; she hadn’t exactly been honest with North Pocono. She hadn’t cheated or anything like that, nor given him bad advice, but she hadn’t exactly been that kind, either. After seeing how well they did, though, Athens had a change of heart. The two of them hadn’t exactly become friends, but she’d gained quite a bit of respect for him.

“I mean, I beat you in Water Quality, so I bet you’re regretting that now, but I really couldn’t have gotten so far without you!” And just like that, he was back to his old self, a bit too loud and more than a little full of himself. Athens couldn’t shake the feeling that she’d seen a side of North Pocono that people rarely got to see, though.

“No problem,” she said, smiling. “It just makes the competition that much more interesting, you know? But, you’re too kind, giving me that sort of credit. You couldn’t have gotten to this level if you didn’t have the natural talent you do.”

“Yeah, I know, I’m great!” They both laughed; it was good to know that although North Pocono was a bit egotistical, he did know his own limits. “Seriously, though, thanks.” Without warning, he stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Athens. To say it caught her by surprise would be an understatement; this was definitely a new side to him.

“You’re… you’re welcome, North,” Athens managed to get out. She wrapped her arms around North Pocono in return, slowly, unsure of exactly how their relationship stood at this point. Then, as suddenly as it began, he pulled away, smiling. Their medals caught briefly on each other’s, pulling taut between them.

“Guess your medals feel like they should be mine,” he quipped. And just like that, once more, he was back to being himself. How he could switch back and forth so quickly was beyond Athens. “You know…” he said, staring at her medals, “we both won a fourth place medal…” After a brief moment’s consideration, he slipped his off and held it out.

“What’s this for?” Athens was lost, completely and utterly.

“Let’s switch medals. That way we’ll have something to remember each other by until next year, when we compete again… you know, to inspire us to do our best!” Athens couldn’t help but laugh.

“That has to be the silliest thing ever; they look exactly alike!” Despite her protest, though, she took off her own medal and handed it over. North Pocono shrugged as he took it and slipped it on in place of his own.

“Well, I’ve got to be heading out… got my own bus to catch, you know?”

“Oh, yeah. Guess it’s been a long two days for you, huh? How long of a trip is it, again?”

“Five hours, or so… so, yeah.” North Pocono smiled awkwardly as he turned away, heading to his own bus

“That boy is so confusing… I hope they introduce a psychology event next year, maybe that’ll help me understand him.” Athens was about to turn around, stepping onto the waiting bus, when North Pocono called out to her one last time.

“Hey, Athens! See you in Fermi Answer 2 days!” He held up her medal and kissed it. “But don’t expect to beat me then!” Athens blushed and clutched North Pocono’s medal tight as he hopped into his bus.

“I’ll be waiting!” she shouted back. Who knows? Maybe next year he’ll only be one place behind.

This reminds me of a really fascinating theological idea I read once. It poses that God meant for the Bible to be full of contradictions, because it isn’t an instruction manual, but a test of character. If you can read through all the books and stories, all the confusing, contradictory statements, and you still choose to take home a message of peace, acceptance, and forgiveness, then you’ve passed God’s test.

I’m not a very religious person, but I still really like that idea.

Answer: ignorance, fat stigma and discrimination.

Better answer: Because people actually do use them as excuses for laziness and irresponsibility and ruin it for people who really do have the genetics and slow metabolism?

If a bunch of people tried skipping practice for something because their grandma was “in the hospital”, you wouldn’t say the coach has a hospitalization stigma because he stops believing people.
